In recent weeks, demonstrators have staged several rallies to denounce the Al Khalifah regime’s decision to revoke Sheikh Issa Qassim’s nationality, the spiritual leader of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.
A large number of activists, public figures and religious scholars have called on Manama authorities to reinstate the citizenship of the 79-year-old Shia cleric.
In addition to that, Pro-democracy protesters, along rights activists have been for days staging a sit-in in front of Sheikh Qassem's house the northwestern village of Diraz, situated west of the capital, Manama.
The demonstrators have called on Manama regime to cancel the lockdown on Diraz, which has been in effect for more than a month. They have vowed not to remain silent in the face of the Bahraini regime’s hostilities and aggressions.
On June 20, Bahraini authorities stripped Sheikh Issa Qassim of his citizenship less than a week after Manama authorities dissolved opposition al-Risala Islamic Association and Islamic Enlightenment Institution, founded by Sheikh Qassim.
The pro-democracy activists say the ruling Al Khalia dynasty is suppressing the political dissent through the Al Saud regime’s political and intelligence support.
Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis Since February 14, 2011.
The demonstrators have called on the Al Khalifah family to relinquish power.
Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others injured or detained in the Bahraini crackdown on the anti-regime activists.
